Greetings from Ottawa,
Back in 2006, Canadians went to the polls and they voted for change. Now, 22 months later, I am proud to say that the Government is clean, the economy is strong and the country is united. We promised Canadians that we would provide principled, focused and effective leadership so that they can confidently plan for their future in a prosperous, safe and united country. In 2007, we delivered.
Canada continues to enjoy one of the longest periods of economic growth in its history. Unemployment is at its lowest level in nearly two generations. Inflation and interest rates remain low. The real disposable income of Canadian households is increasing.
The hard work of Canadians across the country allowed us to reduce the federal debt with one of the largest debt payments in Canadian history. The direct result of this payment will be a reduction in personal income taxes under our Tax Back Guarantee legislated in Budget 2007.
Canadian individuals, families and businesses will receive over $60 billion in broad-based tax relief over this and the next five years, including a second cut to the GST in two years, down to 5 percent.
In 2007 we cut taxes in every way Canadians pay tax to the federal government.
We also took steps to crack down on violent crime. This fall, the House of Commons passed the Government’s first bill of the new session, the comprehensive Tackling Violent Crime Act. It deals with sentencing for gun crimes, making it tougher for accused gun criminals to get bail, cracking down on sexual predators, protecting our children by raising the age of protection, cracking down on drug and alcohol impaired driving, and giving police and prosecutors more tools to get impaired drivers off our roads. Finally, the most violent, dangerous individuals in the country will stay behind bars, where they belong.
If the Senate passes this bill, giving it Royal Assent, Canadians will be better protected from violent criminals.
Our Government also took steps to improve New Brunswick’s infrastructure. On December 7, 2007, we announced the signing of a Building Canada Framework Agreement with New Brunswick worth $541.6 million. This will fund major infrastructure projects that will clean up our water and improve our highways. It also includes a communities component that specifically funds projects in communities whose population is less than 100,000.
Looking ahead to 2008, the Government will continue with its focused agenda to strengthen the federation and our democratic institutions, provide effective economic leadership and tackle crime while strengthening the security of Canadians.
I always enjoy hearing from constituents and welcome your feedback and questions on issues important to you at moorer@parl.gc.ca
