Parliament Passes Bill to Abolish the Wasteful Long-Gun Registry

November 4, 2009 -- Ottawa, Ontario -- Today, MP Rob Moore was proud to cast his vote in favour of Bill C-391, a Private Member's Bill put forward by his colleague, MP Candice Hoeppner, containing provisions to bring an end to the long-gun registry. Earlier this evening, Bill C-391 passed in a vote at its second reading.

"I am extremely pleased that, despite continued obstruction by many members of the opposition, our government has finally been able to pass this measure to repeal the wasteful, ineffective long-gun registry. By doing this, we are at last bringing an end to a costly and unsuccessful venture, which wasted taxpayer's money for over a decade," said MP Moore.

The gun registry was introduced by the Liberal government in 1995. It subsequently failed to have any decisive impact on gun-related criminal activity, even though a report produced by the Auditor-General confirmed that it cost taxpayers billions of dollars.

"Our government has followed through with its promise to get rid of the wasteful gun registry," said Mr. Moore. "This Conservative government supports legislation that targets criminals, not duck hunters and farmers. That is why we are glad to see the abolition of ineffective measures such as the gun registry. In its place, we will continue to put forth legislation that actually reduces crime and keeps Canadians safe."

Bill C-391 received unanimous support from the Conservative caucus. Its passage into law means that Canadians will no longer have to register non-restricted long-guns. The bill must still go through the committee stage, pass in the Senate, and receive Royal Assent before it becomes law.

Rob Moore is the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and the MP for Fundy Royal.
