Federal Government Announces $2 Million in support for Fundy Cruise Welcome Centre Development

September 11 2007, -- Saint John, New Brunswick -- Rob Moore MP for Fundy Royal was pleased to join with his colleague the Honourable Greg Thompson for the announcement that Canada's Government would contribute $2 million in funding towards development of the Bay of Fundy Cruise Welcome Centre. This $3.5 million development is designed to strengthen City Saint John's status a major port in the North American cruise industry.The City of Saint John is contributing $1,134,085 and the Province of New Brunswick is providing $400,000 towards the project.

The $3.5 million project involves the design, construction and landscaping of pedestrian areas related to Saint John's Bay of Fundy Cruise Welcome Centre. Intended as a major corridor to the Bay of Fundy Experience, this cruise passenger terminal will present arriving visitors with a series of public spaces designed to create a positive and lasting impression of Atlantic Canada

Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Member of Parliament for New Brunswick Southwest, on behalf of the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency made the announcement on behalf of the Federal Government.

The Bay of Fundy Cruise Welcome Centre is expected to directly benefit rural communities throughout Southern New Brunswick by injecting revenues in excess of $17 million over the next five years. The total spending by return visitors is expected, over the next five years, to exceed $59 million, which will benefit urban and rural communities alike across Atlantic Canada.
