Federal Contribution Improves Recycling Programs in the Fundy Region

September 2, 2009 -- Saint John, New Brunswick -- MP Rob Moore was pleased to join his colleague MP Rodney Weston for an announcement of federal funding that will improve the recycling programs in the Fundy region.

Funding for the project will make it possible for the Fundy Region Solid Waste Commission to build a sorting conveyor to simplify the process of separating recyclables. In addition, baling equipment will be installed so materials can be packaged on-site for shipment. This will significantly reduce the operational costs of the Commission and will allow it to manage its recyclables more efficiently.

The federal government is investing $220,447 towards the total eligible costs of the project.

"Our government is focused on the economy, and we are committed to creating jobs in the Fundy region. This project will enhance local facilities and services and create local jobs, at a time when the need for economic stimulus is greatest," said MP Moore.

The project is one of 32 across the province that will get underway quickly, thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of more than $48 million, which was announced on July 24 of this year.

The government of Canada has taken steps to advance projects and flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in New Brunswick communities in the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons. As a result of Canada's Economic Action Plan, the amount of federal funding available to provinces, territories and municipalities for infrastructure projects will hit more than $18 billion over the next two years.

Rob Moore is the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and the MP for Fundy Royal.
