Federal Government Provides Funding for Affordable Housing
August 16, 2010 -- Moncton, New Brunswick -- The Honourable Rob Moore, Minister of Small Business and Tourism and MP for Fundy Royal, today announced $6.5 million in federal government funding for the renovation, retrofit of existing social housing, and new construction.
Forty-one housing projects will receive funding for repairs and renovations. The projects are located in 20 different communities in southeastern New Brunswick. Repairs to the 747 social housing units include exterior retrofits, plumbing, energy improvements, and site works. Three new housing developments, all located in Moncton, will create a total of 106 units of which 78 units will be for low-income seniors, including four units for persons with disabilities.
"Year Two of Canada's Economic Action Plan is allowing our government to continue investing in affordable housing here in Southeastern New Brunswick, to help create jobs and improve the quality of life for those who need it most," said Minister Moore. "These projects will help people in our community access safe and affordable housing that meets their needs."
Canada's Economic Action Plan builds on our government's commitment in 2008 of more than $2 billion, over five years, to improve and build new affordable housing and help the homeless, plus up to $2 billion in loans to municipalities for housing-related infrastructure.
