Federal Funds Granted to the Preservation of New Brunswick's Oldest Surviving Church
August 14, 2009 -- Kingston, New Brunswick -- MP Rob Moore today announced federal infrastructure funding designated to the restoration and preservation of the Trinity Church and Rectory National Historic Site of Canada.
"National historic sites, such as Trinity Church, are treasured historic places. They are part of our country's legacy, allowing us to connect our hearts and minds to a stronger, deeper understanding of the very essence of Canada. That is why our government is committed to building the heritage sector by funding the conservation of national historic sites," said MP Moore.
Trinity Church and Rectory is New Brunswick's oldest surviving church, and it was designated a national historic site in 1989.
The federal government is providing $30 000 to prepare a maintenance plan for two church buildings, as well for the installation of four exterior storm windows on the church's north side and the painting of three exterior walls of the rectory.
The project, which is funded under the National Historic Sites of Canada Cost-Sharing Program, will help create jobs in the local economy, support the tourism sector, and help preserve Canada's cultural heritage.
National historic sites contribute to tourism in over 400 communities across Canada through direct spending, visitor spending and related economic activity.
The Cost-Sharing Program, with a budget of $20 million provided in part by Canada's Economic Action Plan, covers up to 50% of eligible costs incurred in the conservation and presentation of a national historic site in the form of reimbursements to the site owner.
"As a result of this program, many skilled construction and conservation professionals will be working to maintain and preserve important historic sites in provinces across the country," added Mr. Moore.
Eligible recipients include other levels of government, not-for-profit organizations and not-for-profit aboriginal organizations.
Rob Moore is the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and the MP for Fundy Royal.
