Conservative Government Continues Funding to Families through the Universal Child Care Benefit
July 22, 2009 -- Ottawa, Ontario -- This month marks the 3-year anniversary of the Conservative government’s introduction of the $1200 per year Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB). MP Rob Moore welcomed the continued success of the UCCB, which helps families cover the costs child care by providing $100 per month for each child under the age of six.
"I have been very pleased to hear positive feedback from my constituents on the Universal Child Care Benefit program," said Mr. Moore. "Our Conservative government believes that when it comes to raising children, each family has its own needs, and this program allows parents to choose the best use for the money, based on their family’s particular circumstances."
This year alone, the Benefit will provide more than $2.5 billion to 1.5 million families.
The UCCB comes as part of the Conservative government’s overall strategy for providing additional benefits to Canadian families. Canada’s Economic Action Plan, Budget 2009, builds on previous investments to support families with children.
In total, the Conservative government is providing $5.9 billion in 2009–2010 to support early childhood development and child care through transfers to the provinces and territories, as well as direct spending and tax measures for families.
"Our Conservative government is committed to supporting the prosperity of families across Canada, and that is why we are following though with measures like the Universal Child Care Benefit," said Mr. Moore.
