Government of Canada Helps Sussex Company Acquire New Technology to Expand Productivity

JULY 7, 2011 -- SUSSEX (NB) -- Donut maker Mrs. Dunster's Inc. is acquiring new technologies that will help expand the company's productivity and improve its ability to serve its export markets, thanks to an investment by the federal government. The Honourable Rob Moore, Member of Parliament for Fundy Royal, today announced an investment of $190,000 towards the project.

"The Government of Canada's top priority is economic growth and jobs for Canadians," said MP Moore. "Through ACOA's Business Development Program, our investment will help increase their productivity, improve their competitiveness in the US market and support jobs here in New Brunswick."

"We are extremely excited about the opportunity to partner with ACOA on this project and to expand our business base in the New England market. To date we have been somewhat limited in our efforts to expand. With freezer capability, we can now extend our reach to markets which otherwise could not be serviced using a direct-store distribution model," said George MacPhee, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Mrs. Dunster's Inc.

The project involves the purchase and installation of a new cold storage halocarbon freezer system, which will enable the company to produce frozen donut products and other bakery items for distribution to the New England area. The new freezer system will increase the shelf life of the products and allow Mrs. Dunster's to expand its reach in the US markets.

The Government of Canada is providing a repayable contribution of $190,000 toward the project through ACOA's Business Development Program (BDP), while Mrs. Dunster's is investing an additional $190,000.

The next phase of Canada's Economic Action Plan will continue to help all regions of the country move forward by creating the right conditions for job creation and economic growth. ACOA helps deliver the plan in Atlantic Canada by focusing on improved business skills and productivity, innovation, commercialization, adoption of new technologies, increased access for businesses to international markets, and stronger communities.
