MP Rob Moore Honours Former Residents of Fundy National Park during Park's 60th Anniversary Celebrations
July 4, 2010 -- Alma, New Brunswick, -- The Honourable Rob Moore, Member of Parliament for Fundy Royal and Minister of Small Business and Tourism, today honoured former residents and their descendants as part of Fundy National Park's 60th anniversary celebrations. Minister Moore was joined for the celebrations by MLA Wayne Steeves, Alma Mayor Hilyard Rossiter, and Parks Canada Superintendant Blair Pardy.
"Besides beautifully representing the Maritime Acadian Highlands and showcasing the great tides of the Bay of Fundy, another very important component to the Park's identity is its rich cultural history which stems from former residents of the park and their families," said Minister Moore. "The Park was once home to generations of local citizens who raised their families, lived off the land and shaped the landscape that we have become so fond of today."
Fundy National Park is marking its 60th anniversary with the development of a cultural history resource mapping project, which uses special computer software to record where the earlier homesteads in the park were located. This information will then be displayed as a map on display panels and electronic devices.
"I'm very excited to hear of this special mapping project at Fundy National Park," added Minister Moore. "The remarkable stories of former residents will be captured and documented to link the legacy of former residents to the mapped homesteads. Uncovering the unique stories of people's relationship to the park land prior to park establishment will be shared for the enjoyment of all Canadians."
Fundy National Park was established in 1948 and opened in 1950. Our government will continue to work to ensure Canada's rich cultural and natural heritage are protected for the enjoyment, education, and appreciation of all Canadians.
