Rob speaking to those who attended
New exhibit at the museum
The cheque
Quaco Historical & Library Society receives $10,000.00 from Government
of New Brunswick
July 3 -- St. Martins -- Premier Bernard Lord was on hand to present a cheque for $10,000 to
the Quaco Historical & Library Society. Rob was also present at the
event that drew a large crowd.
The Quaco Museum has recently gone through major renovations during
the past year. The old floor and floor joists were removed, vapour
barrier was laid on the earth below and a gravel fill was poured in to
bring the surface up. Cement was then poured on top of the tamped
gravel. When the cement had dried, ceramic tile was laid throughout.
Other improvements include new steel double doors at the rear of the
building, a new steel door on the side entrance and the driveway was
lowered to solve a water drainage problem.
An exhibit renewal project has also been underway in the main Exhibit Room.
These improvements would not have been possible without a grant from
the Heritage Branch of the Province of New Brunswick and the generous
financial assistance and support of the Harold Crabtree Foundation.
St. Martins was the third largest producer of wooden sailing vessels
in New Brunswick. Between 1803 and 1900 over 500 vessels were built
and launched in over a dozen shipyards along the beaches, coves and
rivers in and around St. Martins. Lumbering was also an important
industry locally and a great deal of it was required to construct
vessels of the size turned out by local shipyards.
