Quispamsis celebrates official opening of qplex
July 01, 2011 -- Quispamsis, NB -- A large crowd was on hand as part of the Canada Celebrations in Quispamsis during the official opening of the qplex, a new multi-purpose wellness, community and meeting facility. Participating in the ceremonies were the Honourable Rob Moore, Member of Parliament for Fundy Royal, Rodney Weston, MP for Saint John, Senator John Wallace, the Honourable Blaine Higgs, New Brunswick Minister of Finance; and His Worship Murray Driscoll, Mayor of Quispamsis and all the members of the Quispamsis Town Council.
"The economy is our government's top priority and investments in community recreational infrastructure like the qplex - which includes an ice rink, soccer pitch, a pool, and state of the art business and meeting facilities - are investments in the dynamism and vitality of the communities in which we live," said MP Moore.
Designed and constructed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design's gold standard, the qplex features a National Hockey League size ice surface; wheelchair accessible seating area; a wave pool, leisure pool and junior Olympic swimming pool; a three-lane indoor walking track, a YMCA-YWCA community centre, and a rubber surfaced accessible playground.
Construction of the facility was made possible, in part, through the Federal government's contribution of $3 million in 2009, the Government of New Brunswick also provided $3 Million in funding for the project. Additionally, the qplex project also received $2.3 million through the Federal Government's Green Municipal Fund.
The building's state of the art business and meeting facility provides venues in which to host a variety of community and regionally-based activities which contribute to local economic activity The qplex includes a 4,000 square foot multi-purpose room suitable for hosting a range of business and tourism events, and approximately 17,000 square feet of exhibit space in the main floor of the arena.
