Hampton Celebrates Grand Opening of Lighthouse River Centre

June 21, 2008 -- Hampton, New Brunswick -- MP Rob Moore joined local residents, the Town of Hampton and the St. John River Society to officially open the Hampton Lighthouse River Centre. Part of the Lower River Passage network, the multi-use centre serves as a focal point for river-based tourism products and services as well as a location for community-based events and meetings. Hampton Mayor Kenneth Chorley, MLA Bev Harrison and representatives of the St. John River Society were also on hand today for the celebrations.

"Our government is committed to supporting projects that strengthen capacity and advance long-term economic opportunities for communities such as Hampton," said Mr. Moore. "Our investment of over $650,000 is helping the Town of Hampton expand its cultural and recreational offerings as well as diversify the regional and local economy."

The Hampton Lighthouse River Centre is the third of five trailheads along the lower St. John River Valley in the Lower River Passage. The project included the construction of a new building, deck, interpretive displays, as well as renovations to the floating docks and boat ramp. The facility celebrates the region's history, culture, and wildlife on the banks of the Kennebecasis River.

The Government of Canada has invested $654,851 through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency's Innovative Communities Fund, while the Town of Hampton provided the remaining $286,268 needed to complete the project. MP Rob Moore announced funding for the project in 2006.

Rob Moore is the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and the MP for Fundy Royal.
