Hampton Unveils Memorial to Human Rights Advocate John Peters Humphrey
Hampton, New Brunswick – June 15, 2008 – MP Rob Moore joined with the community of Hampton to celebrate the legacy of one of their own today with the official unveiling of CREDO, a memorial to human rights advocate and Hampton native John Peters Humphrey.
"Our government is committed to supporting projects that create economic opportunities for communities like Hampton," said Mr. Moore. "Our contribution of $90,000 for this initiative not only helps to honour John Peters Humphrey and his work, but also creates an educational attraction for residents and visitors alike."
The interactive memorial is located on the courthouse property in the heart of Hampton and features a Hooper Studios' sculpture of John Peters Humphrey. Part of the monument includes four engraved articles of the human rights declaration Humphrey drafted in 1946. The John Peters Humphrey Foundation, which was formed in 2000 to find appropriate ways to honour Humphrey and continue his legacy, also plans the addition of walkways, lighting and improved parking as well as signage leading visitors to Humphrey's former home and gravesite.
The Government of Canada invested $90,000 in this project toward the walkways, land improvements and interpretive signage through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency's Innovative Communities Fund.
