R.B. Bennet Commemorative Centre Celebrates Community Hall Renovations

June 14, 2008 -- Hopewell Cape, New Brunswick -- MP Rob Moore joined with members of the Albert County Historical Society and local residents today to officially open the newly renovated Community Hall, part of the ongoing work to create the R. B. Bennett Commemorative Centre. The milestone coincides with the completion of the first of a three year project to celebrate the life and legacy of Canada's 11th Prime Minister who was born and raised in the area.

"Our government is committed to supporting projects that build on local strengths and create long-term economic opportunity," said Mr. Moore. "Our government's investment of more than $866,000 is helping the Albert County Historical Society showcase the contributions of the Right Honourable R.B. Bennett and, in doing so, creating a valuable addition to the economic infrastructure of the Fundy region."

The R. B. Bennett Commemorative Centre is located on the grounds of the Albert County Historical Society's existing museum site in Hopewell Cape, 250 metres from where Mr. Bennett spent the first 15 years of his life. The project involves the restoration of seven historic Shiretown properties, including the community hall, jail, old municipal building, courthouse, library, store and display barn as well as additional site development. Restoration of the community hall, library and old municipal building has now been completed. The development of an elaborate interpretation program and presentation featuring R. B. Bennett will also be part of the undertaking. The project is designed to enhance local economic development while adding to the tourism offerings of the Fundy region.

The Albert County Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the local and regional culture and history. It acquired Hopewell Cape's nine original Shiretown buildings, constructed circa 1845, and now operates the Albert County Museum in these buildings

The Government of Canada is investing $501,500 in the project through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency's Innovative Communities Fund and $365,237 from Heritage Canada.
