Rob Moore Commemorates Monument to Former PM R.B. Bennett
June 12, 2010 -- Hopewell Cape, NB -- The Honourable Rob Moore, Minister of State for Small Business and Tourism and Member of Parliament for Fundy Royal, joined MLA Wayne Steeves, Premier Shawn Graham, former Prime Minister John Turner, Albert County Historical Society President Dr. Tom Edgett, and others at the Albert County Museum’s grand opening of the R.B. Bennett Commemorative Centre for former Prime Minister Richard Bedford Bennett. Several members of the Bennett family were also in attendance.
"Our government is committed to helping communities build on local economic strengths," said Minister Moore. "This investment has helped the Albert County Historical Society establish a unique addition to the tourism assets of the Fundy region that celebrates the global contributions of R.B. Bennett."
Serving as Prime Minister from 1930 to 1935, Bennett is distinguished as the sole New Brunswicker to hold this position. Governing through the early years of the Great Depression, Prime Minister Bennett brought fiscal restraint during a period of economic hardship. As a result of his support for the creation of the Bank of Canada in 1935, Canada did not suffer Bank failures during the Depression.
The federal government has invested more than $865,000 in the R.B. Bennett Commemorative Centre through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Canadian Heritage.
