MP Rob Moore Welcomes $3 Million Dollar Federal Investment In Wetlands Conservation
May 22, 2009 -- Fredericton, New Brunswick -- MP Rob Moore was in Fredericton today to participate in an announcement of federal funding to Ducks Unlimited Canada for the Atlantic Habitat Partnership Initiative.
"This is good news for Fundy Royal, and indeed for all of New Brunswick," said MP Moore. "Through this project, our government is contributing to the conservation and protection of a diversity of native and migratory birds and many other types of wildlife across the Atlantic provinces."
The federal government will be providing $3 million to the five-year, $9-million Atlantic Habitat Partnership Initiative. This program is designed to maintain critical infrastructure to sustain wetlands across Atlantic Canada in order to conserve wildlife habitat.
The funding from the Government of Canada is being matched by the governments of the four Atlantic provinces as well as private funding secured by Ducks Unlimited Canada.
Mr. Moore acted as Master of Ceremonies at the announcement.
"This funding from the Government of Canada will contribute to five years of valuable infrastructure construction projects in wetland areas," said Mr. Moore. "In addition to conservation and protection, the Atlantic Habitat Partnership Initiative will also provide jobs and stimulate the local economy."
The project will sustain and strengthen a system of 560 water control structures, 150 fish ladders and over 170 kilometres of dykes on more than 400 square kilometres of wetlands. Many of the wetlands were created or maintained over the past 15 years under the North American Waterfowl Management Plan and its agent in the Maritimes, the Eastern Habitat Joint Venture.
Rob Moore is the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and the MP for Fundy Royal.
