Government of Canada Supports Riverview Seniors Citizens Club
May 21, 2009 -- Riverview, New Brunswick -- Rob Moore, Member of Parliament for Fundy Royal, was in Riverview today to announce support from the Government of Canada for the Riverview Senior Citizens Club.
"Our government is pleased to support the Riverview Senior Citizens Club," said Mr. Moore. "This funding will encourage seniors in Riverview to remain active and involved in their community."
The Riverview Senior Citizens Club will receive $7,850 in funding from the federal New Horizons for Seniors Program. This funding will support a conference planned and organized by the Club entitled "Working Together - Seniors Youth Reaching Out / Sharing our Experiences," a conference that will encourage other seniors, youth and community organizations to build networks and partnerships.
"With their valuable wisdom and experience, seniors play an important role in our communities," said Mr. Moore. "This conference is an excellent opportunity for seniors in Riverview to share these valuable gifts and benefit their community."
The News Horizons for Seniors Program is a federal program which provides funding to local non-profit organizations that offer seniors' programs. The funding announced today comes from the Community Participation and Leadership component, which encourages seniors to contribute to their communities by sharing their skills, wisdom and experience and helps to reduce their isolation.
Their are two other components to the program: Capital Assistance Funding provides grants to upgrade community facilities and equipment related to existing programs for seniors, and Elder Abuse Awareness Funding supports projects that raise awareness of the abuse of older adults.
The Government of Canada issued a Call for Proposals for the Community Participation and Leadership component in April 2009. Proposals will be received until June 12, 2009.
Rob Moore is the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and the MP for Fundy Royal.
