Government of Canada Supports Symphony New Brunswick

May 19, 2009 -- Saint John, New Brunswick -- Today MP Rob Moore joined MP Rodney Weston at an announcement of funding for Symphony New Brunswick. MP Weston announced that the Government of Canada will match private-sector donations to the organization.

"Our government is pleased to support the arts in New Brunswick," said Mr. Moore. "Symphony New Brunswick plays an important role in our province, and this funding will support the Symphony in fulfilling that role."

The Government of Canada is providing $27,851 in funding to Symphony New Brunswick.

The funding has been provided through the Endowment Incentives component of the Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program. Through this program, the Government of Canada is providing 72 cents for every dollar donated by the private sector to eligible arts organizations.

"This funding is good news for New Brunswick," added Mr. Moore. "Not only will it support the concerts and programs by which Symphony New Brunswick enriches our communities, it will support the jobs related to these activities.

Since 2006, this program has provided more than $44 million to various endowment funds while the private sector has provided $72 million, for a total of more than $116 million.

This initiative complements other measures taken by the government to encourage private-sector participation in arts funding, such as the tax exemptions on capital gains for donations of publicly traded securities to registered charities announced in the 2006 and 2007 budgets.

Rob Moore is the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and the MP for Fundy Royal.
