Rob Moore Addresses Concerns Regarding Expansion of Fundy National Park
May 19, 2009 -- Alma, New Brunswick -- MP Rob Moore today responded to concerns regarding discussions of Fundy National Park expanding its boundaries.
"As Member of Parliament for Fundy Royal, I am firmly opposed to any plans to expand Fundy National Park, and I will work to preserve its current boundaries," said MP Moore. "The idea of expanding the park has not come from the people of New Brunswick, and I will not support it."
Certain media reported recently that discussions have taken place on expanding the Park to take over land currently owned by the Province of New Brunswick.
Crown land, land which is neither privately owned nor designated as Park land, can be used for a wide range of activities with minimal or no fees. Within Park limits, however, these activities—such as camping, fishing, hunting, mountain biking, and the use of snowmobiles and All-Terrain Vehicles—are strictly regulated or prohibited.
Fundy National Park falls entirely within the federal riding of Fundy Royal, which Mr. Moore represents.
"Many of my constituents have expressed their opposition to any expansion of Fundy Park," said Mr. Moore. "They fear that they will lose access to the places and activities they love. Any land taken up as park land is land they can no longer use. They wish to enjoy the outdoors outside of a park environment."
Several others have voiced their opposition to expansion, including local Member of Legislative Assembly Wayne Steeves.
"Our wild areas are a very important part of New Brunswick," said MP Moore. "While National Parks are wonderful assets and play an important role in preserving our natural heritage, they are not the only way New Brunswickers wish to enjoy the outdoors."
"Any expansion of Fundy National Park would require approval at the Ministerial level. I will make it clear to the Minister of the Environment that I do not wish to see any expansion of the park boundaries."
Rob Moore is the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and the MP for Fundy Royal.
