MP Rob Moore welcomes funding for Joint Emergency Preparedness Program
May 6, 2008 -- Ottawa, Ontario -- In his Member’s Statement today MP Rob Moore thanked first responders, emergency workers and volunteers for their hard work and dedication to alleviate the effects of severe flooding in New Brunswick. Mr. Moore also expressed his appreciation to the Prime Minister, who recently visited New Brunswick to show his support.
"I would like to thank the first responders and volunteers who have worked so hard to deal with the flooding in New Brunswick and for the Prime Minister’s welcome visit and show of support to our Province during this difficult time," said Mr. Moore.
Mr. Moore also noted the beginning of Emergency Preparedness Week, which was launched yesterday by the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety. Minister Day announced government funding of $5 million for the provinces and territories to support emergency preparedness through the Joint Emergency Preparedness Program (JEPP).
"JEPP Programs are used to enhance and strengthen local emergency management capacity, and to work with our local partners to help keep Canadians safe," said Mr. Moore. "I encourage all Canadians to take time during Emergency Preparedness Week to make a plan and prepare an emergency kit. Emergencies can happen anytime, anywhere. Being prepared can make a world of difference."
Emergency Preparedness Week is an annual event that occurs the first week of May to increase awareness about individual emergency preparedness so that Canadians can reduce the risks and lessen the consequences of emergencies. This year marks the 13th anniversary of Emergency Preparedness Week, a national campaign coordinated by Public Safety Canada in collaboration with provincial and territorial governments and other partners. This year's theme is "72 hours - Is your family prepared?" Canadians are encouraged to be ready to cope on their own for at least the first 72 hours of an emergency. This will enable first responders to focus on those in urgent need.
Rob Moore is the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and the MP for Fundy Royal.
