MP Rob Moore Welcomes new funding for Drug Treatment Initiatives

April 28, 2008 -- Ottawa, Ontario -- MP Rob Moore today welcomed new government funding of $111 million over 5 years to boost drug treatment options for at-risk youth. This funding is part of the government’s National Anti-Drug Strategy.

“Our government’s strategy to fight illicit drug use in Canada provides a balanced approach that is both tough on crime and compassionate to those addicted to illicit drugs,” said Mr. Moore. “Drugs are dangerous and destructive. This is why our government is committed to ensuring that those who are addicted to illicit drugs get the help they need.”

The Drug Treatment Funding Program (DTFP) is a new federal contributions program under the Treatment Action Plan of the National Anti-Drug Strategy. The Fund will strengthen treatments through investments in early intervention initiatives to reduce illicit drug use among youth. It will also provide an important boost to the drug treatment options that are available to young people who are at-risk.

“Let me be clear, while we have no tolerance for drug dealers and producers who prey on our youth, those who are addicted to drugs will be able to find help,” said Mr. Moore. “The funding announced today, along with our legislative proposals, will go a long way towards ensuring we have safer streets and communities.”

As announced by Prime Minister Harper on October 4, 2007, the National Anti-Drug Strategy is a collaborative effort involving Health Canada, Public Safety Canada and the Department of Justice and includes three action plans: preventing illicit drug use; treating those with illicit drug dependencies; and combating the production and distribution of illicit drugs.
