Government of Canada Supports 2009 World Curling Championship

Moncton, New Brunswick – April 3, 2009 – MP Rob Moore today announced $50,000 in federal funding for the 2009 World Curling Championship held in Moncton.

"Our government is pleased to support the World Curling Championship," said Mr. Moore. "By bringing together the world’s finest curling rinks, the Championship will provide players and spectators alike with an outstanding opportunity to enjoy the highest level of curling competition."

Mr. Moore delivered remarks at the opening ceremony of the Championship. The Government of Canada is providing the Canadian Curling Association with funding of $50,000 through Sport Canada’s Hosting Program to help make this event a success.

Twelve countries—Canada, U.S.A., China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Norway, Scotland, and Switzerland—have qualified to compete at these World Championships, which are being held in Moncton from April 4 to 12, 2009.

"Our top Canadian curlers worked hard all season to earn the opportunity to compete against the world’s best," said Mr. Moore. "Their performances will inspire us and give us a taste of the excitement to come at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games."

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the World Curling Championships. The Men’s World Curling Championship was held for the first time in Scotland in 1959.

Rob Moore is the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and the MP for Fundy Royal.
