Fundy Royal to Benefit from Additional Gas Tax Funds

April 3, 2009 -- Saint John, New Brunswick -- MP Rob Moore was pleased to participate at an announcement of the doubling of the Federal Gas Tax Fund to support municipal infrastructure projects.

"We’re following through on a commitment we made in Budget 2007," said Mr. Moore. "These additional funds will benefit Canadians by improving infrastructure, creating jobs, and meeting the needs of families, workers, and businesses."

On April 1, 2009, transfers to municipalities through the Federal Gas Tax Fund doubled to $2 billion annually. Municipalities can use this fund for wastewater infrastructure, drinking water, local roads and bridges, public transit, and green energy.

Last year, Mr. Moore’s riding of Fundy Royal received $1,521,604 in federal investments through the Gas Tax Fund; this year it will receive double that: $3,043,209. Furthermore, this year the monies will be available almost three months earlier than they are normally, accelerating these important investments.

"Our government is proud to work together with other levels of government to deliver for the needs of Canadians," said Mr. Moore. "The Gas Tax Fund is providing New Brunswickers with stable, long-term funding that will have a tangible impact on their quality of life."

Gas Tax funding is provided nation-wide and the money is allocated based on population. The Fund will remain at this new level beyond 2014, when the government makes it a permanent measure.

Rob Moore is the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and the MP for Fundy Royal.
