Minister Rob Moore Attends Elmira Maple Syrup Festival
March 27, 2010 - Elmira, Ontario - Today, the Honourable Rob Moore, Minster of State for Small Business and Tourism, joined Member of Parliament Harold Albrecht at the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival.
Recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records, the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival is the world’s largest one day festival.
When it was first held on April 10, 1965, organizers anticipated 2,500 attendees, but the festival instead drew a crowd of over 10,000 people. Today, 40,000 to 65,000 visitors flock to the festival each year, where the town of 12,000 plays host to visitors from across the world, including tourists from the United States, Mexico, Europe and Australia. During the festival, over 2,000 volunteers participate and raise funds to support local charities and non-profit organizations.
One of the most notable events at the festival is the pancake flipping contest. Minister Moore and MP Albrecht were both proud participants in the event, which regularly features politicians, celebrities and businesspeople, as well as their competitive friends.
"The Elmira festival is a great example of a Canadian tradition that brings the community together. It’s great for local businesses, wonderful work is happening for a number of charities and, of course, it’s also a whole lot of fun," said Minister Moore.
The Elmira Maple Syrup Festival helps to build and strengthen the surrounding community sprit through the involvement of a large number of area residents, who help plan and operate the one day festival. Each year, the festival is a source of great pride and helps to support the community and local maple syrup producers.
Rob Moore is the Minister of State for Small Business and Tourism and the MP for Fundy Royal.
