Governments of Canada and New Brunswick Building Communities

March 13, 2009 -- ALMA –- Residents of Alma will benefit from joint federal and provincial investments to improve local water services. Combined federal and provincial funding of more than $176,000 was announced today by Rob Moore, Member of Parliament for Fundy Royal, and the Honourable Bernard Leblanc This project is but one example of the commitment of both governments to strengthening the New Brunswick economy and improving the quality of life for its residents.

The project will enhance local facilities and services and create local jobs, at a time when the need for economic stimulus is greatest. Federal, provincial and municipal governments will each invest up to $88,422 in the project to improve the reliability of the Village’s water supply system.

“The Government of Canada is working together with the provincial and municipal governments to deliver results to the people of New Brunswick with improvements and upgrades to the water system in Alma,” said Rob Moore, MP for Fundy Royal. “Our federal investment of more than $88,000 will make a difference in the community by improving the quality of life for the people who live and work here, and helping the local economy now and for years to come.”

The project involves the installation of a backup generator, additional storage capacity and completion of a second well for extra pumping capacity to ensure continued water supply during power outages and periods of system maintenance. Another pressure tank will also be installed at a booster station to reduce pump running time, equipment wear and energy consumption. Funding for this project is contingent on completion of all contractual agreements, including pending Environmental Impact Assessments with municipalities.

The infrastructure improvement project is one of 32 across the province that will get underway quickly thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of more than $38 million. Together with municipal contributions, the total investment in local infrastructure improvements in New Brunswick during this first intake exceeds $57 million. The governments of Canada and New Brunswick have taken steps to advance projects and flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in New Brunswick communities in the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.

Rob Moore is the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and the MP for Fundy Royal.
