Relocation of Home Commemorates the Life of Captain Molly Kool
February 19, 2010 -- Alma, NB -- The Honourable Rob Moore, Minister of State for Small Business and Tourism and MP for Fundy-Royal today joined the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister for the Atlantic Gateway and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) in Alma for an announcement concerning the Albert County Heritage Trust (ACHT).
With the help of federal support, the Alma residence of the late Molly Kool, one of the first women in North America to earn the rank of Sea Captain, will be relocated to Fundy National Park. The relocation of the home will raise additional awareness of Ms. Kool’s unique achievements and highlight the extensive marine history of the area.
"I had the great pleasure of meeting Molly Kool in 2007. A remarkable woman, she left a lasting impression, and this relocation of her home is a great commemoration of her achievements," said Minister Moore. "It is also a great way to let people learn about an important part of our heritage and this area’s history," Minister Moore added.
ACHT, which is managing the relocation, is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and preserving historical and cultural structures and sites in the Albert County area. The organization will use the government support to relocate the former residence of Molly Kool to the entrance area of Fundy National Park. Ms. Kool’s former home will become a heritage centre, celebrating the life of the famous captain and the colourful marine history of the area.
The Government of Canada will contribute $57,000 toward the project under the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF), a key economic stimulus initiative under Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
Canada’s Economic Action Plan provides $1 billion over two years for the CAF, which will help create jobs and maintain employment in communities affected by the economic downturn.
